The fight for Tunisia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-padding-right:0px;--awb-padding-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:calc( 1300px + 0px );margin-left: calc(-0px \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-0px \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:20px;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:0px;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:20px;--awb-spacing-left-medium:0px;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-margin-top-small:4vw;--awb-spacing-right-small:0px;--awb-spacing-left-small:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1 mezeviris-post-content\"><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the beginning of December 1942, the position of the Allies in\u00a0Northwest Africa\u00a0had been stabilized and the eastward advance of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0British Army was continuing.\u00a0\u00a0In the ports of\u00a0Algiers,\u00a0Oran\u00a0and\u00a0Casablanca\u00a0large quantities of supplies were arriving, in spite of the losses caused by enemy attacks.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Nonetheless,\u00a0Tunisia\u2019s fall even it appeared certain, wasn\u2019t to be immediate.\u00a0\u00a0The Germans, by sending reinforcements in\u00a0Tunisia\u00a0from the air, had stopped the advance of the Allies from the west and the weather and\u00a0Algeria\u2019s road conditions didn\u2019t allow them to undertake a serious winter expedition.\u00a0\u00a0A better organization and preparation was necessary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually because of this provisional suspension of operations and because they were still nurturing great hopes for a favorable development of the war in the Russian front, many German chiefs were optimistic for the situation in the\u00a0Mediterranean.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Grand<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Admiral Raeder<\/strong>, the Commander in Chief of the German Navy, maintained that with the installation of the Axis forces in\u00a0Tunisia\u00a0they had counterbalanced the adverse results of the Allied landing in\u00a0North Africa. The supply lines of its armies had significantly shortened, while on the other hand the enemy\u2019s had lengthened and were more easy to take.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The above German arguments would have been valid if the Axis disposed the means to take advantage of the Tunisian bridgehead.\u00a0\u00a0Above all, a significant reinforcement of his air forces was needed, while at the end of November 1942, it only disposed half of the air force of the Allies.\u00a0\u00a0In the spring of 1943, the Allied air forces were almost 5 times as much as the enemy\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0The Allies disposed at that time in the area on a constant basis at least 4 battleships, while the Italian \u2013because of fuel shortage- were immobilized.\u00a0\u00a0Against the 12 cruisers of the Allies at the end of November 1942, the Italians had 8 in service, reduced to 1 by April 1943, while they also fell short in the number destroyers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under these conditions the supply of Tunisia by the Italians, in spite of the shortening of the distances, was becoming problematic and necessitated very important sacrifices and ammunition losses, when they were becoming all the more rare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyhow, from February 1943, when the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0British Army had reached\u00a0Tripoli\u00a0and the Germans had suffered the\u00a0Stalingrad\u00a0destruction, it became evident that the battle of the\u00a0Mediterranean\u00a0had been definitely lost for the Axis.\u00a0\u00a0If it was then decided to orderly evacuate the troops from\u00a0Tunisia, there would still be possible to save an important part of them.\u00a0\u00a0It seems that many in\u00a0Italy\u00a0then believed that the fight was lost and that after the total seizure of\u00a0North Africa\u00a0by the Allies, the metropolitan\u00a0land\u00a0of\u00a0Italy\u00a0would be next targeted.\u00a0\u00a0The Germans however continued to insist that until the summer of 1943\u00a0Russia\u00a0would submit and the\u00a0Mediterranean\u00a0could then be re-gained.\u00a0\u00a0They even confirmed that they disposed a secret weapon [the V1 and V2 land to land cruise missiles] that was indeed used towards the end of the war, without succeeding to bend the opponent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of January 1943, Admiral Raeder resigned and was replaced by\u00a0<strong>Grand<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Admiral<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>D<\/strong><strong>\u00f6<\/strong><strong>nitz<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0The later visited\u00a0Italy\u00a0in March and suggested to Hitler the need to reinforce the air forces in\u00a0North Africa\u00a0and &#8211; as his predecessor has done- an intervention against\u00a0Gibraltar.\u00a0\u00a0At the same time however he blamed the Supreme Command of the Italian Navy that it was using as an excuse the fuel shortage, to explain the inactivity of the Italian Fleet.\u00a0\u00a0He even replaced the German liaison officer<strong>\u00a0Vice-Admiral Weichold<\/strong>\u00a0for supporting the Italian views, by\u00a0<strong>Vice-Admiral Ruge.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>In spite of all this,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>statistics that the Italians presented show that the fuel shortage was real and the events prove that for the supply of\u00a0Libya\u00a0and\u00a0Tunisia\u00a0no effort was spared by them, independently of the losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3172,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[142],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3710","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-naval-war-of-the-mediterranean-1939-1945"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>9.
