At the front it disposed of about 500 airplanes, relatively few, but among the best of that period and with excellent personnel.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>General Alexander<\/strong>, the new Commander in Chief, had a written instruction by the British prime minister\u2019s own hands that \u201chis first and main mission was at the first opportunity to take prisoners or destroy the German-Italian Army under the command of\u00a0<strong>General Rommel\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the supplies and ammunitions of the Axis.\u201d<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>On the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>other hand,\u00a0<strong>General Montgomery<\/strong>, Commander of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0British Army, as soon as he took over his command he communicated to his troops the instruction \u201cno retreat\u201d that he applied with absolute consistency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British attacked was launched on\u00a0October 13, 1942, and that same day the general who provisionally replaced Rommel was killed.\u00a0\u00a0Rommel returned on October 26, with instructions from Hitler not to withdraw at any price. However, he quickly realized the seriousness of the situation and asked the authorization from Hitler to retreat. He received from the later the answer \u201cvictory or death\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 1, Rommel marked in his diary: \u201cthis is the end, we are facing the eve of\u00a0Africa\u2019s Dunquerque.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Two days later, when his best units at the front had been destroyed, ignoring Hitler\u2019s orders he started to retreat.\u00a0\u00a0On November 20, the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0British Army was seizing\u00a0Benghazi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the fast advance of the enemy and the successive seizure of\u00a0Cyrenaica\u00a0ports by him, the supply problem of the Axis armies was becoming tragic.\u00a0\u00a0The British, on the other hand, were disposing plenty of land transportation means and the Mediterranean Fleet was securing the sea supply of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Army.\u00a0\u00a0The ports seized by the British were quickly repaired and in\u00a0Alexandria\u00a0numerous tow ships, minesweepers and other small units were ready to intervene.\u00a0\u00a0In just 3 days after the seizure of the\u00a0port\u00a0of\u00a0Tobruk\u00a0it was possible to unload 3,000 tons of supplies per day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the mean time the Allies were completing preparations for landing in\u00a0North Africa.\u00a0\u00a0The Axis was aware of these preparations, but while the Supreme Command of the Italian Navy \u2013 from information that had collected \u2013 considered the operation as imminent and with most probable landing area the French North Africa, the Germans believed that the Allies weren\u2019t in position to undertake such operation before the following summer and that the most probable landing area was the South of France.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, even if the Axis leadership knew the exact date and area of the allied landing, it didn\u2019t dispose at that time the means to prepare a successful resistance.\u00a0\u00a0Berlin\u00a0had replied to an Italian request that, because of the situation in the other fronts, they shouldn\u2019t be expecting any significant reinforcement of the German land, sea and air forces in the\u00a0Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, there was no doubt that the Allies would support the operation with powerful naval forces and the Italian Fleet had the obligation \u2013 even if there were few chances of success- to react with the all available large and small units.\u00a0\u00a0It was of course necessary to dispose the necessary quantities of fuel, effective air reconnaissance and &#8211; to a certain degree at least \u2013 air coverage for the ships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Italians were expecting all the above from the Germans and because the later couldn\u2019t provide, when the landing time came the Italian Fleet didn\u2019t move.\u00a0\u00a0The Allied naval forces were only confronted with submarines and the Air force.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3172,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[142],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3698","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-naval-war-of-the-mediterranean-1939-1945"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.7 -
