\u201cThe enemy Air force and submarine activity was creating new losses to the British.\u00a0\u00a0Among other, in March 1942 the British lost their destroyer\u00a0HMS<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>JAGUAR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The situation in\u00a0Malta\u00a0had become unbearable. The naval base was in rubbles and surface ships could not remain in their base.\u00a0\u00a0Thus, in the end of March, all ships that could sail left for\u00a0Alexandria\u00a0or\u00a0Gibraltar\u00a0where they arrived with only the loss of the destroyer\u00a0HMS<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>HAVOCK<\/strong>, sunk by an Italian submarine.<\/p>\n

Two destroyers had remained with very serious damages that were sunk by the enemy Air force.\u00a0\u00a04 submarines – among them the Greek submarine\u00a0RHN GLAFKOS<\/strong>\u00a0– were lost following enemy air raids.\u00a0\u00a0The remaining submarines started transferring in April to other bases of\u00a0Southeast Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

During that period, enemy ships and airplanes laid new mine fields around\u00a0Malta.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0One submarine and 2 auxiliary ships were lost beginning of May, having hit these mines.<\/p>\n

Admiral\u00a0\u039d\u03b1\u03cd\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03c2<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Cunningham\u00a0<\/strong>was dispatched to\u00a0Washington\u00a0to represent the British Admiralty in the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in the preparation of the cooperation of future large scale operations of the two Navies.\u00a0\u00a0Admiral Wippel<\/strong>\u00a0took over provisionally as Commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, replaced later by\u00a0Admiral Harwood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Towards the middle of April the situation in\u00a0Malta\u00a0had reached an extremely critical point. Besides the terrible destructions, there were all kinds of supplies, ammunitions and food shortages.\u00a0\u00a0The German Air force, facing no serious resistance, was executing attacks from very low attitude systematically destroying all the defence infrastructure of the island.<\/p>\n

On April 20, \u2018Spitfire\u2019 type airplanes flew to\u00a0Malta\u00a0from aircraft carriers in\u00a0Gibraltar.\u00a0\u00a0In a mater of a few days these airplanes were destroyed.\u00a0\u00a04 submarines and a fast minelayer ship undertook the supply with fuel and ammunitions.<\/p>\n

At that time an attempt by Axis forces to seize\u00a0Malta\u00a0wouldn\u2019t have met serious difficulties.\u00a0\u00a0The relative preparation was practically finished.\u00a0\u00a0There was provision for a 33,000 men landing force, a large number of landing crafts and around 1,300 airplanes were available.<\/p>\n

The Italian Supreme Command proposed to the Germans to undertake the operation as soon as possible.\u00a0\u00a0However Rommel, although realising the strategic importance of the island, asked the operation be launched after the end of the final attack against the British in\u00a0North Africa\u00a0that was in its final stage of preparation.\u00a0\u00a0He feared that if this later was delayed the British would be reinforced and that the occupation of the Air force in\u00a0Malta\u00a0would be at the expense of the operations in the\u00a0Cyrenaica.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Besides, he was expecting that the British resistance will not last more than a week and that one more week was necessary to take advantage of the results. Thus, it was agreed the operation for the seizure of\u00a0Malta\u00a0to be postponed for the second fortnight of July 1942.<\/p>\n

However, Hitler who was determining the fortunes of the war effort of the Axis decided differently.\u00a0\u00a0He was not realising the importance of dominance in the\u00a0Mediterranean\u00a0for the whole evolution of war operations and that to acquire it a basic element was the possession of\u00a0Malta.\u00a0\u00a0He thus withdrew an important part of the German Air forces that he sent to the Russian front.\u00a0\u00a0The forces that remained in\u00a0Sicily\u00a0started at the end of April transferring to the\u00a0Cyrenaica.\u00a0\u00a0It was a fatal error for the Axis.<\/p>\n

Starting in May 1942 with the arrival in the\u00a0Mediterranean\u00a0of the first American Air forces, the Allies started winning back air supremacy.\u00a0\u00a0Twice in the first fortnight of May, an important number of fighters were sent from aircraft carriers to\u00a0Malta.\u00a0\u00a0The reinforcement of the Air forces of the island was to soon have an important impact on the Axis transports.<\/p>\n

At the same time the British minelayer\u00a0HMS<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>WELSHMAN\u00a0<\/strong>succeeded to\u00a0<\/strong>escape from the enemy naval and Air forces vigilance and transport ammunitions to\u00a0Malta.\u00a0\u00a0An attempt to send supplies from\u00a0Alexandria\u00a0with 5 destroyers on the night of May 11, has however totally failed with serious losses.<\/p>\n

The destroyers were detected by the enemy Air force south of\u00a0Crete\u00a0and running the risk to face much more powerful enemy naval forces, they reversed course towards\u00a0Alexandria.\u00a0\u00a0On they way back, 3 of them were sunk by German airplanes coming from the\u00a0Cyrenaica.<\/p>\n

On the other side, the Italians lost in April 1942 the cruiser\u00a0RN<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>BANDE<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>NERE\u00a0<\/strong>that a British submarine sunk, while sailing from\u00a0Messina\u00a0to\u00a0La Spezia\u00a0for repairs.<\/p>\n

At around the middle of May, an attempt by Italian means of attack against the\u00a0port\u00a0of\u00a0Alexandria\u00a0was repeated, but failed.\u00a0\u00a0After two months a similar operation against the\u00a0port\u00a0of\u00a0Haifa\u00a0also failed, when an enemy destroyer sunk the submarine carrying these means of attack.<\/p>\n
