style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs we have already explained, the situation at sea and air in the\u00a0Mediterranean\u00a0was very critical for the British at the beginning of 1942, given that the Axis disposed clear supremacy in weaponry.\u00a0\u00a0Malta\u00a0was being continuously hit and soon any operation of the naval forces stationed there became impossible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, on land, the attack of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0British Army was developing satisfactorily.\u00a0\u00a0The British had seized in December 1941, the Libyan ports of\u00a0<strong>Derna<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Benghazi<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0However the continuation of the advance was dependant upon the sea transport of large quantities of ammunition and supplies, especially fuel, from\u00a0Alexandria.\u00a0\u00a0On this route enemy submarines were extremely active causing important losses, even at the expense of some own losses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, it was necessary to obstruct as much as possible the supply of the Axis forces.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Fleet of Alexandria was now unable to successfully execute such mission and the Airforce was also missing sufficient forces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, 2 Italian convoys that departed on\u00a0January 3, 1942, arrived safe in\u00a0Tripoli, without harassment from the British.\u00a0\u00a0As a matter a fact the Italians had disposed a large coverage force including 3 battleships, as they didn\u2019t dispose yet clear information about the results of the attack of the port of Alexandria\u00a0<em>[see: <a href=\"\/en\/the-naval-war-of-the-mediterranean-1939-1945\/5-6-italiki-epithesi-sto-limani-tis-aleksandreias\/\">\u201cThe Italian attack against the port of Alexandria\u201d<\/a> ]\u00a0<\/em>and were not aware of the sinking of the battleship\u00a0<strong>HMS BARHAM<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0\u00a0The German submarine that had sunk the British battleship had reported the sinking of a cruiser.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2603 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mezeviris.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1-HMSBarham-medium-init-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"141\" height=\"102\" \/><strong>HMS BARHAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These convoys had not been detected by the British reconnaissance, as at that time there was just one reconnaissance plane in operation stationed in\u00a0Malta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Italians were busy with the above operation, the British succeeded to safely escort a tanker to\u00a0Malta\u00a0and another empty-one from there to\u00a0Alexandria.\u00a0\u00a0Towards the middle January 1942, another convoy of 4 ships was dispatched with an escort of light forces, of which 3 arrived safely at their destination.\u00a0\u00a0A German airplane sunk one and a German submarine sunk one of the destroyers of the escort.\u00a0\u00a0The majority of the supply ships arrived safely because, this time, air reconnaissance and fighter planes from\u00a0Cyrenaica\u00a0and\u00a0Malta\u00a0had successfully operated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the supply of\u00a0Malta\u00a0became extremely difficult when the Axis forces started their counter attack on\u00a0January 21, 1942\u00a0and the advanced airfields of the British were seized by the enemy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The continuation of the supply of\u00a0Malta\u00a0being an absolute must, an operation took place on\u00a0February 12, 1942, in spite of the dangers that such operation entailed.\u00a0\u00a0On that date, a convoy of 3 ships escorted by 7 destroyers and an anti aircraft cruiser, were covered by a force of 3 cruisers and 8 destroyers, left the\u00a0port\u00a0of\u00a0Alexandria.\u00a0\u00a0None of the supply ships reached its destination.\u00a0\u00a0One that was hit by an airplane on February 13 was sent to\u00a0<strong>Tobruk<\/strong>\u00a0and the other 2 were later sunk from air raids.\u00a0\u00a0The British only succeeded to safely escort 4 empty cargoes from\u00a0Malta\u00a0to\u00a0Alexandria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Italians, on the other hand, from the middle of January 1942 the route to\u00a0Libya\u00a0was open and remained open till the end of April 1942, when the German Air force started again to withdraw to the Russian front.\u00a0\u00a0During that period, large quantities of supplies were transported with very few losses.\u00a0\u00a0Thus, in January about 66,000 tons of supplies and fuel were transported without losses and in the following two months 107,000 in total with only 9% losses, mainly due to submarines.\u00a0\u00a0In April, when\u00a0Malta\u00a0was practically neutralized, convoys were being dispatched with an escort of only 1-2 destroyers and were able to cross undisturbed at a distance of only 50 miles from the island.\u00a0\u00a0On that month, 150,000 tons were transported with losses on 1% only.\u00a0\u00a0However, from May 1942, when\u00a0Malta\u00a0had started to be reinforced, quantities transported were reduced to 86,000 tons and losses reached 7.2%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 1942, during a sortie of the naval forces of\u00a0Alexandria\u00a0aiming to attack Italian convoys, an enemy submarine sunk the cruiser\u00a0<strong>HMS NAIAD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2604 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mezeviris.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2-HMSNAIAD-large-brt-60.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" 400w, https:\/\/www.mezeviris.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2-HMSNAIAD-large-brt-60.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><strong>HMS NAIAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">During the first quarter of 1942, British submarines had several successes. They sunk 6 enemy submarines, 1 destroyer and 16 cargo ships and caused damages to several others.\u00a0\u00a0These successes were made possible with important sacrifices.\u00a0\u00a0In the period from the day\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Italy<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0declared war till the end of March 1942, 20 British submarines were lost in the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mediterranean<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3172,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[142],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3670","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-naval-war-of-the-mediterranean-1939-1945"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.7 -
