{"id":3629,"date":"2021-04-21T18:14:40","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T18:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mezeviris.gr\/uncategorized\/4-8-i-ekkenosi-tis-ellados-apo-tous-bretanous\/"},"modified":"2021-05-24T09:31:10","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T09:31:10","slug":"4-8-i-ekkenosi-tis-ellados-apo-tous-bretanous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mezeviris.gr\/en\/the-naval-war-of-the-mediterranean-1939-1945\/4-8-i-ekkenosi-tis-ellados-apo-tous-bretanous\/","title":{"rendered":"4.8 The British evacuate Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-padding-right:0px;--awb-padding-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:calc( 1300px + 0px );margin-left: calc(-0px \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-0px \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:20px;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:0px;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:20px;--awb-spacing-left-medium:0px;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-margin-top-small:4vw;--awb-spacing-right-small:0px;--awb-spacing-left-small:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1 mezeviris-post-content\"><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn spite of extreme difficulties, because of the complete air supremacy of the enemy, the withdrawal of the British troops from\u00a0Greece\u00a0was successfully completed by the British Fleet with minimum losses and with almost no air coverage, because the British air forces stationing in\u00a0Greece\u00a0had withdrawn to\u00a0Crete\u00a0and other bases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beginning of operations was scheduled for\u00a0April 28, 1941, but because of the startling developments it was advanced by 4 days.\u00a0\u00a0All available cruisers and destroyers were placed under the orders of\u00a0<strong>Vice-Admiral Wippel<\/strong>, who was responsible for the operation.\u00a0\u00a0In total 4 cruisers, 3 small antiaircraft cruisers, about 20 destroyers, 3 auxiliary, 19 troop transports and various small crafts necessary for boarding the ships were used for this operation.\u00a0\u00a0Boarding started one hour before dusk and mainly took place in open gulfs of\u00a0Attica\u00a0and the\u00a0Peloponnesus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total 50,672 men, of whom only 500 were lost, were transported.\u00a0\u00a0The transport of about 6,000 men didn\u2019t materialize and the men were taken prisoners, because their boarding port \u2013Kalamata,\u00a0Peloponnesus-\u00a0was seized by the enemy before the beginning of boarding.\u00a0\u00a0Crete\u00a0was used as intermediate station for the final transport to\u00a0Egypt.\u00a0\u00a0In the evacuation operation 2 destroyers and 4 troop transport ships were lost.\u00a0\u00a0The transport operation from\u00a0Crete\u00a0to\u00a0Alexandria\u00a0was made with large convoys and without loss.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Italian Fleet didn\u2019t appear during the whole operation and only the German Air force put up resistance.\u00a0\u00a0The Hellenic Navy suffered large losses from the German Air force activity during that period.\u00a0\u00a0In about a fortnight, 4 R.H.N. destroyers and 4 torpedo boats were sunk. Another 6 torpedo boats that couldn\u2019t sail were sunk by the Hellenic Navy.\u00a0\u00a0The German Air force also sunk the old reserve battleship KILKIS, 2 torpedo boats, 5 auxiliaries of the Fleet and a large number of cargo ships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Italians advance several excuses for the inaction of their Fleet.\u00a0\u00a0They were not aware that the British air forces were at a critical point in that period.\u00a0\u00a0Although the British had used only light forces for the evacuation, the Alexandria Fleet was on the look out with 3 battleships against 2 in activity of the Italians.\u00a0\u00a0Finally, the German Air force had refused to co-operate, advancing again the same excuse that if Italian ships were to appear in the\u00a0Aegean\u00a0it was possible that the German pilots would attack them taking them for British.\u00a0\u00a0Assumingly, the main reason of for the non-interference of the Italian Fleet was the setback of\u00a0Taranto.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, with the prospect of the seizure of\u00a0Greece, the Italian and the German navies had agreed on an allocation of responsibilities between them.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Germans were getting the control of the\u00a0Aegean\u00a0\u2013 with the exception of the\u00a0Dodecanese-\u00a0and the Italians the area west of\u00a0Corinth.\u00a0\u00a0In addition, the Italians were to dispose a naval force in the\u00a0Aegean\u00a0\u2013initially 8 escort destroyers, a torpedo boat squadron and few auxiliaries- under German operational command.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3172,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[142],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3629","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-naval-war-of-the-mediterranean-1939-1945"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.7 -
